Malli Nadu
In India, flowers are an essential part of daily life, they are sacred symbols, most of them dedicated to Hindu religious ceremonies. They are used to make garlands to adorn the hair or for various social occasions, especially weddings.
Every day, tonnes of flowers are taken by smallholder farmers to local flower markets, where they are sold for use in religious ceremonies and as ornaments.
There the jasmine sambac buds are called 'malli'. As Tamil Nadu also means 'the land of Tamils', the name 'Malli Nadu' was chosen to literally evoke 'the land of jasmine'.
