Danner&Flemming - More iris than perfumery thought possible
Danner & Flemming began when chemistry professor Werner Kunz, living in France, discovered the potential of iris cultivation and launched a multi-year research project to test growing and processing iris in Bavaria. That project grew into a dedicated fragrance atelier: farmer Christian Danner cultivates the iris rhizomes in his own Bavarian fields and invented the machinery needed to make that cultivation possible there in the first place, while biologist Marcel Flemming refines the rhizomes into extract and butter using a patented method – rapid, gentle drying that preserves more fragrance compounds in the raw material than usual.
The result is a concentration niche perfumery hadn't seen before: between 2.5 and 4.1% iris in the perfume oil, shaped by master perfumer Antoine Lie into the three fragrances of the Millésime Parfum collection – Iris Altesse, Iris Poulsard and Iris Trousseau. Lie himself calls it a first in his career, working with this much iris in one formula – it isn't a market analysis that decides a fragrance's profile here, but the raw material itself.
What makes Danner & Flemming special to us ?
This devotion to a single raw material – how a farmer and a biologist spent years making one Bavarian flower tangible at a concentration that even a perfumer as experienced as Antoine Lie calls new to him. Each of the three fragrances reveals a different facet of the same plant, and it's exactly that passion and spirit of experimentation that makes the brand so special to us.
